Raven cooked a light lunch, and they ate on the top deck.

The meal calmed Mara considerably. She leaned back against the wall.

“I haven’t been on a houseboat in forever.”

“Tell me about it.” He sat beside her.

“I was in high school,” she said. “Every year my church did a houseboat retreat, all the high school-aged kids. Fun weekends. Got me out of the house and away from my mother. They weren’t anchored like yours. Am I using the right word?”

“We’ll use it,” Raven said.

“We’d be out in the water, two or three houseboats, actually. The girls lounged in inner tubes and the guys would jump off the roofs to impress us.” She smiled.

“Did it work?”

“Sometimes but coming home with a church boy was not something mother would have approved of. She didn’t like me going.”

“Why?”

“Took away her control, I guess. She wanted me to be her pet. Always in the house. She needed something to punch when the booze got to her.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t worry about it.”

Raven picked at the leftover chicken on his plate but pushed it away and drank more water. The tangible pain etched on Mara’s face made him hurt. Her memories seemed only filled with misery, the desire to break away from misery a common theme. There was nothing he could do to change her. She needed to fix herself. She needed to want to fix herself, find some way of proving she was her own person, free to make a happy life. Perhaps the flower shop had been her attempt, but whatever life she’d built was gone now. He hoped she would have a chance to start a new one.

Raven collected the dishes and brought them down to the kitchen, where he placed them in the sink for later. His Raiders were on the way and knew how to get to the marina. By the time they arrived, hopefully he’d have heard from Oscar Morey. Rest was fine, but what he wanted was action. A strike back against Basheer el-Dowd. And a chance to find out who was pulling the strings placing them in the crosshairs.
